Conjoint Professor Trevor Waring AM 

1943 - 2016

This building honours Conjoint Professor Trevor Waring AM (1943-2016), distinguished psychologist, community leader, and Chancellor of the University of Newcastle from 2004 to 2012.

The first alumnus of our University to serve as Chancellor, Professor Waring devoted five decades of service as a student, academic, Council member, Deputy Chancellor, Chancellor, and valued member of the University community.

Professor Waring commenced his studies at the University of Newcastle as a mature-age student, completing degrees in psychology before building a highly respected career in clinical psychology and mental health. He made significant contributions to the psychology profession in Australia and is widely recognised for his work in suicide prevention. In 2004, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his outstanding service to mental health and psychology.

As Chancellor, Professor Waring provided steady and thoughtful leadership through a significant period of change and growth. His leadership strengthened the University's connection to the region and helped advance its reputation as an institution dedicated to excellence, opportunity and public impact.

A proud advocate for the transformative power of education, Professor Waring believed deeply in the University's role in expanding opportunity and improving lives. Widely respected for his integrity, wisdom and warmth, he was deeply committed to students, staff and the broader community. He was renowned for his ability to connect with people from all walks of life and for his genuine interest in the success and wellbeing of the University community.

Professor Waring's legacy lives on in the University he served with such distinction, and in the generations of students, staff and graduates whose lives have been enriched by his leadership, vision and enduring commitment to education.
